Our photography collection includes maritime themed images in a variety of 19th and early 20th century formats. Images include those of Civil War and naval, whaling, and yachting many by prominent photographers.





A0295 MAMMOTH CIVIL WAR PHOTO OF USS SANTEE
This very rare mammoth plate albumen photo of the 44 gun frigate SANTEE was taken by noted photographer J. W Black. in 1864. She is shown at Newport RI after she saw active duty during the Civil War. At the end of the war she and the USS CONSTITUTION moved to Naval Academy at Annapolis. She was built at Portsmouth and launch in 1855.
The title is hand lettered and the image measures 12 x 16 (sight)

A0077 LARGE CIVIL WAR PHOTO OF USS TUSCARORA WITH COMMISION OF D. H. CROWELL
Captain David H. Crowell 1820-1920 of Chatham Massachusetts entered the U S Navy in 1861 and served as Acting Master aboard the USS Tuscarora. Prior to his enlistment in the Civil War, he headed a party of Argonauts to California during the Gold Rush.

This period photograph, commission, signed by Navy Secretary Gideon Wells and the CDV of Crowell were owned by him. The albumen of the Tuscarora is huge measuring 13.5 x 18 inches (sight) in period frame. The reverse inscribed with Crowell's service on the warship.
